Keynote: Christopher Wylie

The Whistleblower on Cambridge Analytica data-scandal

We are delighted to have Christopher Wylie as our keynote for the Media, Design & Creativity theme.  He is one of the most influential people of 2018. Christopher worked with The Guardian and The New York Times as a whistleblower to expose how social media data was being exploited and turned against ordinary citizens.

Time nominated Christopher on their 100 Most Influential People 2018 list for his work revealing the risks posed by unfettered data misuse and the growing power of large technology companies. His testimonies at the United States Congress and British Parliament served as a wake up call for many and have quickly led to new legislative proposals in both countries. Christopher is a graduate of the London School of Economics and lives in London, UK.

Keynote: Sheela Birnstiel

Lead character in the Netflix documentary series "Wild Wild Country"

We at Gather are delighted to welcome a truly interesting and “outlier” of their times, Sheela Birnstiel, as our Urban Planning & Society theme keynote.

Sheela Birnstiel is one of the most controversial lead characters of  Wild Wild Country (Netflix, 2018), a documentary series that looks at her key role in the development of the cult of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (later known as Osho) and addresses issues such as conspiracies, alternative post-hippy religious cults and culture shock, among many others. The documentary series led many people, including some of us at Gather, to wonder what we can learn from the life of  Sheela Birnstiel about creating a better society and culture.

Rethinking Democracy – When Design meets Politics

Accenture Labs will explore when design meets politics

Democracy is in crisis. All around the world we’re using electoral systems that are no longer fit for purpose. Public participation isn’t state-owned anymore and increasingly, other entities are better able to prototype intelligent methods that can help the world make better decisions. Yet our politics haven’t changed with this shift. As designers and citizen activists, we’ve started designing new processes that help citizens make better decisions, and have figured out how we can design to bring more convergence between people. In this workshop, Fjord, Design and Innovation from Accenture Interactive, will take a Service Design approach to map the gaps that lie behind current voting systems, and design potential solutions to generate a healthier decision-making process for the common good.

Rethinking Democracy

Accenture Labs explores when design meets politics
